Emphasising the role of teachers in moulding the character of students, Professor S H Patel advised teachers to protect human rights and educate children in this regard. He was speaking after inaugurating a three-day workshop on Teaching Human Rights organized for government school teachers of Harihar taluk at Doddabathi in the outskirts of Davangere on 9 July. The programme was organized by Davangere Human Rights Forum in association with Don Bosco Child Labour Mission and Cream Children Rights organization. “Poverty, ignorance and illiteracy have become the enemies of human rights in the world. The need of the hour is that policy makers of the nation must include a chapter on human rights in the school curriculum to create awareness among school children”. He said.
Prof Patel bemoaned the existence of social and economic inequality in the country. Concerted efforts are needed from people of all walks of life, elected representatives and bureaucrats to ward off such inequalities, he said. In his address, Davangere Human Rights Forum General Secretary, L.H Arunkumar, expressed displeasure over casteism in the society that hinders protection of human rights. School students should be educated about human rights, he added.
Davangere Human Rights Forum Vice-President, B M Hanumanthappa, expressed concern over crimes such as sexual assault on minors that amounts to human rights violations. He called upon people to hit the streets for the sake of human rights to sensitise people to uphold human rights.
Don Bosco Child Mission Administrator, Fr. Rubin Mathew, Margaret Sampath, Manjunath and others were present on the occasion.
