Bangalore Rural Educational and Development Society (BREADS) launched the ‘Food to your Doorstep’ initiative, free of cost, for families that are COVID positive and are in quarantine at home in East Bangalore. ‘Food to your Doorstep’ is an initiative by 5 non-profit organisations namely Don Bosco BREADS, The Good Quest Foundation, Project Vision, AIFO, and ECHO. The initiative called ‘Corona Care Bengaluru’, has been serving the COVID infected and affected vulnerable communities since March 2020 by distributing essential ration kits, cooked food, and hygiene kits for the needy. The ‘Food to your Doorstep’ initiative launched on 26 April 2021, delivers free nutritious food to the doorsteps of people in quarantine for 14 days. The service is mainly for COVID-positive patients, especially for people who need assistance and for families with old people.
The meals are vegetarian and the menu includes wheat chapatis, vegetable dish, rice, sambar, egg, pickle and fruits on alternate days. The meal is distributed once a day by the volunteers. Safety precautions are mandatory while cooking the food and all the volunteers (a mix of students and working professionals) wear N95 masks, gloves, and head cover.
The families in need of support are required to provide essential details in a request form to avail the service. These forms are received by the Beneficiary Relations Team, which tracks their locations. The volunteers assigned to the COVID patients, pick up the food from the centralised kitchen and deliver it to the doorsteps of the patients.
The areas presently covered by this food service include Frazer Town, Cooke Town, Benson Town, Cox Town, Lingarajapuram, Banaswadi, Kalyan Nagar, Kammanahalli, RT Nagar, Sultanpalya, Munireddy Palya, Jalahalli, Hennur, Tannery Road.
