Substance abuse is a widespread problem that affects individuals, families, and communities worldwide. In an effort to raise awareness about the negative effects of drug abuse, the Drug Rehabilitation Education and Mentoring (DREAM) programme in Kollam, Kerala, recently conducted an anti-drug awareness programme at the Saras Mela, a national food and cultural exposition. The event was organised by the Kudumbashree Mission and was held on 8 May 2023 at Ashramam Ground, Kollam.
Making use of the excellent opportunity to engage with the community, the DREAM Kollam team used Ottan Thullal, a traditional recite-and-dance art form of Kerala, as the mode of presenting the anti-drug theme. Hundreds of people, including parents and children, witnessed the performance and gained valuable insights into the harmful effects of drug abuse.
The programme was an excellent initiative that not only educated people about the dangers of drug abuse but also fostered a sense of community involvement in addressing the issue. It is a shining example of how traditional art forms can be used to raise awareness about social issues and promote positive change in society.
