Child Rights Day Celebrations – CREAM Ramanagar

CREAM – Ramanagar had organized two district level campaigns [Drawing competition and a public program], the theme of which were ‘Evil effects of Child marriage and Child Labour on the occasion of the International child rights day on 20th November 2014 (Jubilee year of UNCRC) in collaboration with the CRCs, Government departments such as Education, Women and Child Development, DCPU and various schools. They program was organized in the DCPU at the D.C’s office premises in Kandhaya Bhawan – District head quarter of Ramnagar district.

The focus was to celebrate the International Children’s’ Day – the Jubilee year of UNCRC and to provide opportunity for children from different schools of the district to articulate on the said themes and express and exhibit their ideas and talents in a public forum. A short function was organized in the morning to mark inauguration of the competition which was presided over by Sushmitha, representative of CRCs of Chennapattana taluk. She spoke about the objectives, functioning and role of CRCs promoted under the CREAM project in Ramanagar. Around 102 Children from 19 schools and selected children from CRCs of Ramanagar district participated in the competition. There were many surprises when children were provided with charts, pencils, colour pens etc that chiselled their minds to articulate and depict their ideas on the theme in the form of drawing. All the drawings were displayed around the venue for public viewing.

Selection of winners of the competition was done by a small committee consisted of Child Protection Officer, Drawing Teacher and a CREAM project staff. Swaroop [Little Pretty School], Sudeep, [Govt. K.M.P. School] and Abishek [from CRC Kanakapura taluk] were adjudged for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. Three children from different government schools were selected for consolation prizes.
Fr. Mathew Thomas, Director, Don Bosco Yuva Marg, Mr. Sundaram, Director, SJJ-CREAM, Ms Rathna B. Kalamdhani Deputy Director WCD, Ms. Nagalambika Women Protection Officer and DCPO were present fort the function. The Deputy Director, WCD in her presidential speech explained about the salient features of UNCRC and subsequent land mark legislations passed on the care and protection mechanisms established in India for the wellbeing of children. She had appreciated the efforts of the organizers of the program for organizing such a colourful event marking 25th year celebration of the UNCRC. Media persons from different news agencies have covered the program and given wide publicity in their respective dailies.
