The Drug Rehabilitation Education and Mentoring (DREAM) programme team in Kannur organised a mentors’ training programme on 29 April 2022 at Don Bosco College Angadikadavu, Kannur.
The DREAM programme envisages a strong role for teachers as mentors to educate them on addictions, thereby enabling them to prevent and address substance abuse. In this context, 43 teachers from 17 schools and 1 college in the district were trained about various addictions, especially on substance abuse among children, its personal and social consequences and the skills/capacities needed to deal with the victimised students.
The programme was inaugurated by Adv. Sunny Joseph (MLA, Peravoor LAC). Mr Rejith C (Excise Inspector, Iritty Range) and Mr Sajeesh PK (Vimukthi Coordinator) facilitated the programme. The inaugural function was followed by sessions by Mr Sameer KK (Civil Excise officer) and Mr Nisar Koloth (Preventive Officer, Vimukthi Mission) on substance addiction, government policies to deal with drug prevention, de-addiction services and team-building skills. The teachers actively participated in the programme and gave positive feedback about their experience.
