Don Bosco College, Sulthan Bathery has always prioritized social responsibility. The college management (Rector and Community) deliberated over the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to create a framework for providing relief for those in need. Selected faculty members and 65 registered student volunteers were designated with specific tasks as part of the initiative.
Under the leadership and guidance of Fr. Johnson Ponthempilly SDB, Vice Principal of the college, the relief teams focused on three municipalities in Wayanad district- Sulthan Bathery, Mananthavady and Kalpetta. The student volunteer groups assisted COVID-19 relief activities in the Taluk hospital, Police Station in Sulthan Bathery and St. Martin’s Hospital, Ambalavayal. The student groups have been serving registered COVID-19 patients by offering psychosocial support through tele-counselling. Similarly, students supported Manathavady and Kalpetta municipalities in providing medical and health services to COVID-19 patients. A hundred families in need of help have been provided with vegetable and grocery kits. The team is also working towards providing Pulse Oximeters in different parts of the district.
Ten students from Don Bosco College have been selected for the training programme in tele-counseling offered by the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC). An online prayer meeting was conducted on 15 May 2021 under the aegis of Jesus Youth to offer spiritual support to those in distress.
The college is hugely grateful to BREADS Bangalore for supporting this noble endeavour. The college is incredibly proud of its staff and student volunteers who have been responding in a socially responsible manner and providing a humane touch to the COVID-19 relief activities. Don Bosco College, Sulthan Bathery is humbled by the positive response from the people who have been the beneficiaries of the relief activities.
