Skilling Fisher Folk – Skill-training Programme, Kollam

Over the years, the Fishermen Community Development Programme (FCDP) and Theeradesha Mahila Society (TMS) have made tremendous contributions towards the development of the fisher community in the coastal district of Kollam, Kerala. FCDP’s programmes and activities benefit all men, women, youth and children of the fishing community. The new skill training programme of FCDP was initiated to capacitate youth and women in relevant competencies for the job market.

The completion of the first batch of the skill training programme is a great pleasure because 168 students and women are empowered through various job-oriented skills. FCDP provides training in various courses such as nursing and palliative care, tailoring, computer skills and food processing. The Government of India-certified Artisan card is also facilitated for the trainees. The certification of the first batch of students; 14 women trained in handicrafts and 154 women trained in other skills, was organized on 5 August 2019 at FCDP Hall, Kollam. The certification ceremony of the batch was inaugurated by Mr. B. Abdul Nasar- IAS, District Collector, Kollam. He highlighted the significant issue of imprudent waste disposal along the coastal line and insisted that everyone make more conscious efforts towards better disciplined waste management. The other important dignitaries on the occasion were Mr. A. Pradeep Kumar-Assistant Commissioner, Kollam; Mr. Sajith M.S. – RTO; Mr. Milton. S. -Professor, Kristuraja Secondary School; Fr. Joby Sebastian- FCDP Director; and Ms. Agnes P.P- TMS President. The dignitaries enlightened the participants and the trainees with their inspirational words and appreciation.
