On 20 September 2023, Don Bosco PYaR organised a parents’ meeting at the Government Higher Primary School, Ganajalkhed in Kalaburagi. Sixty-eight parents of children from three activity centres in the village, gathered to discuss children’s rights, the necessity of parental engagement in education, as well as government schemes and programmes accessible to students and their parents.
In July 2023, Don Bosco PYaR started 30 activity centres for children in Kalaburagi taluk, spanning 11 villages. Each of the activity centres has around 40 students enrolled, and an overall outreach of 1200 children. The activity centres provide opportunities for mutual learning, life skill orientation, sports, group activities, games, nutrition, and talent promotion programmes. The activity centres are promoted by Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives (APPI) and Bangalore Rural Educational and Development Society (BREADS), to “Empower Children Through Education and Child Rights Promotion”.
The parents’ meeting is one of the activities to achieve its goal. Also present as chief guests, were School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) members, Kumsi Gram Panchayat members, Anganwadi teachers, community leaders, and the Headmistress of the local school. Mrs. Geeta, the Project District Coordinator, discussed the project’s aims and provided an update on the children’s engagement in the activity centres. Similar meetings will be conducted in all the 30 activity centres in the coming days.
