In commemoration of International Women’s Day, BREADS’ Don Bosco partner agencies implementing its WELivE initiative across Kerala, organised a series of meaningful and empowering activities in March 2026, to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women. More than 200 women took part in the programmes. The Women Empowerment through Livelihood and Entrepreneurship (WELivE) programme promotes sustainable income for rural women in Karnataka and Kerala through entrepreneurship development and social empowerment.
At FCDP Kollam, the celebration focused on skill development and safety. A self-defence training session was conducted to equip women with practical skills for personal protection and confidence building. In addition, tailoring machines were distributed to selected beneficiaries to promote their livelihood opportunities and economic empowerment.
In Kottiyam, an awareness programme on women’s rights and gender equality was organised, particularly addressing the issue of domestic violence. The session aimed to educate and sensitise participants on their rights and the importance of creating a safe and equitable society. A theme dance performance in collaboration with the Department of Social Work, Don Bosco College, added a cultural dimension to the celebration, effectively conveying social messages through art. Further, the Kottiyam WELivE unit, having identified a struggling woman in the locality, presented her with a tailoring machine to encourage her entrepreneurial aspirations and sustainable livelihood.
The Angadikadavu WELivE community organised a gathering of beneficiaries from past batches, offering them a platform to exhibit their products, interact with one another, and share their personal journeys and success stories. This initiative encouraged peer learning and strengthened community bonds. A get-together was conducted at Alappuzha for the current participants of the WELivE programme, offering them a day of relaxation and enjoyment filled with cultural activities and performances, fostering a sense of belonging and celebration.
Overall, the Women’s Day celebrations across BREADS’ Don Bosco partner agencies in Kerala, were vibrant and impactful, focusing on empowerment, livelihood support, and community engagement among women.
