About BREADS

Helping Each Other can

BREADS – Bangalore Rural Educational and Development Society is the Development Organization of the Salesian Province of Bangalore. We assist and promote the development activities of NGOs, particularly the Don Bosco partners in Karnataka and Kerala. We are part of an international network of Don Bosco organizations working in over 130 countries across the globe. We draw our inspiration from Don Bosco, Priest and Educator of the 19th century, who dedicated his life to young people especially the marginalized. Children, young people and women have been the main target group of all our projects and programmes, as we believe that they are the most vulnerable and subject to abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Yasmeen was born in a poor family in the village of Martur. She is the eldest in the family and has four younger siblings. The financial and poor economic conditions at home forced her to stop going to school at an early stage though she aimed and dreamed of pursuing higher education. She started to look after the house hold activities went along with her mother to work thereby bringing financial support to family.

Eramma, a motivated 15-year-old girl, comes from Dhonambali at Deodurga, Raichur, where the malaise of high dropout rates, child marriage and devadasi still persist. She is the president of the Child Rights Club formed under the CREAM project in the local public high school. During her studies, she discovered a 9-years-old girl called Shilpa who was working as a domestic laborer in a governmental employee’s house.

Kotresh is a young boy from the Davangere district of Karnataka. His family and village were severely affected by the droughts specific to the area, which destroyed all of their livelihood options. Kotresh’s parents moved out of the village in search of a better life and new employment opportunities that might come their way. In his journey, Kotresh saw other children of his age going to school.

Devraj, a single-parent child growing up in Bangalore, did not have an easy-going life after his father passed away. He tried his best to support his family financially by doing part-time jobs. After completing his high school, he was at a crossroad, without a direction. At this point of time, he was introduced to the Don Bosco BREADS Educational and Skill Training (DB BEST) Academy, through his parish.

Divya, as the eldest daughter with two younger brothers, was brought up as a responsible, vibrant, and cheerful girl. She lost her father at a very young age and her mother was the sole support of the family. Hailing from a middle-class family, Divya always aspired to become a success in her studies and career as she deeply desired to support her younger siblings and mother to have a decent standard of living.

Nausin Banu, one of five children of Aminoddin and Rehana Banu, is a native of Naribol village, Jewargi taluk, Kalaburagi. The family lives in abject poverty due to their insufficient income and irregular jobs. After attending the local Anganwadi (government early childcare centre), Nausin became irregular at school and eventually dropped out.

I’m Isaac Immanuel, from a middle-class family in Bangalore. Until I completed my preuniversity course (PUC) I did not have any problems as my Father was there to guide and help me. Unfortunately, in 2020, he got a stroke and became bedridden. My mother was unable to work as she is a physically disabled person. My younger sister is in the 6 th grade.
