Risk is an ever present factor we contend with daily. It is also an extremely important factor that affects the efficacy and stability of social work organisations. Therefore, a workshop on “Assessing and Managing Risk – Capacity Building for PDOs” was held on 17-18 February 2026 at the Don Bosco Provincial House in Bangalore, for the Directors of development programmes supported by Misean Cara. The programme was organised by BREADS with the support of Misean Cara and Don Bosco Aid.
A total of 22 participants from various Salesian Province Development Offices (PDOs) attended the workshop, including CAUVERI (Trichy province), SURABHI (Chennai Province), Bosco Seva Kendra (Hyderabad province), Don Bosco Development Society (Mumbai province) and BREADS (Bangalore Province).
The workshop was inaugurated by Fr. Mathew Thomas, Salesian UN Representative, who emphasised the importance of networking for risk reduction and being prepared to face unexpected challenges. Fr. P. S. George, Executive Director of BREADS, welcomed the gathering. Dr. Tom Jose served as the resource person and led the sessions.
The sessions covered key themes such as understanding risks in NGOs, types of organisational risks, risk management frameworks, risk assessment and prioritisation, risk mitigation and preparedness, developing a risk register, and strengthening risk management systems within organisations. The workshop was highly interactive with group discussions, practical exercises, and presentations. It enabled participants to deepen their understanding of risk management processes, identify potential risks within their organisations, and get familiar with practical management tools such as risk registers and mitigation plans.
On the second day, the Provincial of Bangalore province, Fr. Jose Koyickal greeted and encouraged the participants to strengthen institutional systems and collaboration among PDOs for effective risk management. The workshop concluded with a commitment among the participating PDOs to build resilient organisations that are risk-aware, prepared, and responsive to emerging challenges.
