BREADS marked the launch of its new initiative Sports for Change with a state-level orientation held on 3 July 2025. Designed as a dynamic response to the increasing vulnerability of young people to substance abuse in Kerala, the project uses sports as a tool for transformation, creating safe and engaging environments for youth. The meeting brought together project stakeholders from seven centres across five districts in Kerala to plan and initiate this unique anti-drug campaign through structured sports engagement.
Through this initiative, BREADS seeks to promote teamwork, resilience, leadership and purpose among young people, elements crucial in building protective factors against risky behaviours. The project aims to engage hundreds of adolescents through regular coaching, mentoring and tournaments that reinforce positive choices and a sense of belonging.
The inaugural meeting was presided over by Fr. George P. S., Executive Director of BREADS, who highlighted the critical need to address the rising rates of substance abuse among youth and reaffirmed the potential of sports in promoting discipline, healthy competition and self-growth. He encouraged all stakeholders to view sports not just as games but as a platform for life education.
Fr. Jitto Joy, Assistant Director of BREADS, stressed the importance of maintaining clarity of purpose and intentionality in the programme’s implementation, calling for commitment from all partners involved. Also present at the event were Fr. Josh, Director of the Sports Commission of the Salesian Province of Bangalore and Fr. John, Youth Services Director of Kerala, who reiterated their support and shared insights on integrating sports with youth development strategies.
Representatives from all seven sports hubs, including directors, coaches and community coordinators participated in the meeting. Discussions focused on project timelines, implementation strategies, training methodologies and monitoring mechanisms. The Advanced Sports Hub, being a key part of the project’s vision, was also presented as a centre of excellence to nurture high performing youth athletes and peer leaders in the anti-drug movement.
Sports for Change is more than an anti-drug campaign; it is a commitment by BREADS to invest in the future of Kerala’s youth by offering them opportunities to grow, lead and thrive through sports. BREADS extends its gratitude to all partners and stakeholders for their enthusiastic support and collaboration in this important journey.
