In India, the narrative of girls’ education and empowerment has undergone a remarkable transformation, with young women now shattering barriers and achieving milestones across various fields. Gundamma, a spirited young girl from a marginalized community in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, embodies this change through her extraordinary journey of resilience, determination, and sporting excellence. Her story highlights the impact of Don Bosco’s BREADS (Bangalore Rural Education and Development Society) initiatives for vulnerable children.
Gundamma’s early life was fraught with challenges. She lost her mother at a young age, and her father, struggling with alcoholism, was absent from the family. Facing an uncertain future, Gundamma was admitted to a hostel in Kalaburagi. Her life took a positive turn when she joined Don Bosco PYaR (Partners of Youth at Risk), a partner organization of BREADS, where she found care, education, and mentorship. She completed her 10th Standard and is now pursuing her Pre-University Course in Science at Don Bosco College, Yadagiri.
Sports became a pivotal part of Gundamma’s life during her time with the Don Bosco system. She actively participated in kabaddi, volleyball, throwball, and football, but her love for football stood out. Inspired by her younger brother Chandu, a passionate football player, Gundamma discovered her own talent for the game.
This year, her football journey reached a new high when her college team competed in tournaments at the district level in Mysuru, Chikkamagaluru, and Bellary, reaching the semi-finals. During one of these events, Gundamma was selected to represent Karnataka at the national level, marking the beginning of her professional football career.
“I’ve always loved sports, but football has become my greatest passion,” Gundamma shared. “Participating in these tournaments and being selected to represent Karnataka is a dream come true.”
For Gundamma, football is not just a sport—it’s a vehicle for transformation. She dreams of excelling internationally in football and using her platform to uplift underprivileged children through sports training. Her ultimate goal is to build a home for her siblings, creating a safe and happy space for her family.
One of four siblings, Gundamma’s younger brother Chandu studies at Don Bosco Kalaburagi, while her elder brother works as a driver in Bangalore, and her elder sister is married. Gundamma is determined to honor the Don Bosco Salesian priests, who have been instrumental in shaping her journey.
Gundamma’s achievements reflect the unwavering support and encouragement of the Don Bosco family. The BREADS initiatives, which focus on the holistic development of vulnerable children, have played a crucial role in nurturing her talents and providing her with opportunities to thrive.
The Don Bosco family celebrates Gundamma’s success and cheers her on as she continues to break stereotypes and redefine possibilities for young girls from marginalized backgrounds. Her story is a testament to the power of persistence, mentorship, and the transformative impact of sports.
As Gundamma kicks off her football career on the national stage, she stands as an inspiration for countless children across India. Her journey serves as a beacon of hope, proving that with determination, support, and hard work, no dream is too big to achieve.
