Sports for Change
Sport has the power to transform lives by instilling discipline, teamwork and confidence in
children. Recognising this potential, BREADS launched Sports for Change across five districts
in Kerala— Kasargod, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki and Kottayam—to provide structured sports
training and opportunities for underprivileged children and youth. Sports and positive
recreational activities for children and youth help them develop healthy social relationships and
avoid addictions because of healthy life choices.
Six Sports Hubs designed to nurture more than 300 young athletes through regular practice,
mentoring and exposure to competitive sports are set up. These hubs focus not just on athletic
skills, but also on the holistic development of children, encouraging qualities like leadership,
persistence and self-confidence.
In addition, an advanced Sports Hub at Don Bosco Vaduthala, Ernakulam offers specialised
training across multiple disciplines, enabling talented youth to pursue sports at higher levels. The
initiative ensures that children who otherwise lack access to professional coaching, infrastructure
and mentorship can dream bigger and aim higher through sports.
In Bangalore, Karnataka, a peer-to-peer model is adopted, where young men who were
rehabilitated through the Don Bosco network and now are certified sports coaches, will coach the
young boys and girls of BOSCO Bangalore in various forms of sports. It is hoped that the shared
experiences and understanding by the coaches will have an even greater impact on the children.
Through Sports for Change, BREADS reaffirms its commitment to using innovative tools of
empowerment for young people. By opening doors to opportunities in sports, the initiative
aspires to shape not only athletes but also well-rounded individuals ready to face challenges with
determination and resilience.
