Leprosy is Curable, Stigma is Not!!!!!

On 26 January 2025, World Leprosy Day was observed across the globe, turning a spotlight on the stigma and challenges surrounding leprosy. In India, the disease remains a major health concern, with 107,581 new cases reported in 2023 alone, accounting for a staggering 59% of all new cases globally (Statista.com). In response to this ongoing challenge, the Indian government has unveiled the National Strategic Plan & Roadmap for Leprosy (2023–2027), with a clear goal to eliminate leprosy transmission by 2027, two years ahead of the global target outlined under the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

In Karnataka, these efforts are further strengthened by BREADS-supported mobile clinics in Bidar and Davangere. From 30 January to 21 February, Leprosy Awareness Weeks were observed to raise awareness about the disease and its profound impact on individuals and communities. This year’s WHO theme, “Unite. Act. Eliminate.,” was a call to action for everyone to come together, take decisive steps, and work towards the elimination of leprosy.

Awareness sessions in schools and communities across Bidar and Davanagere focused on educating participants about the signs and symptoms of leprosy, such as skin patches, numbness, and muscle weakness. These sessions emphasised the importance of seeking timely treatment and encouraged people to recognise the early signs of the disease. These programmes strived to break the stigma surrounding leprosy and promote early detection, creating a supportive and informed environment for those affected.

A rally in Vadgaon village, Bidar, saw vibrant participation from children, youth, and local leaders, coming together and chanting slogans to spread awareness throughout the village.

These collective efforts reaching around 500 people, highlighted the importance of education, hope, and unity in the fight against leprosy, and fostering a more supportive community. The initiatives also emphasised the importance of awareness in promoting better health practices among young individuals.
