Cancer continues to be a major global health concern, with 20 million new cases and 9.7 million deaths reported in 2022. In India, the number of reported cancer cases is steadily rising, with 14.6 lakh new diagnoses in 2022 alone (WHO). World Cancer Day 2025 holds great significance in raising awareness, encouraging action, and advocating for improved healthcare systems. This year’s theme, United by Unique, highlights a people-centred approach to cancer care, emphasising the individual experiences of those affected by the disease.
The BREADS’ Mobile Clinic teams acknowledging the importance of World Cancer Day to strengthen its ongoing efforts in the fight against cancer, carried out a series of cancer awareness programmes across various districts in February. The awareness sessions conducted in Bidar, Kalaburagi, and Davanagere, focussed on educating rural population about early detection, prevention, and healthy living practices.
In Bidar, a cancer awareness session was held at Basava Tirtha PU College in Hallikhed. The session covered lifestyle factors such as a nutritious diet, regular physical activity, and avoidance of tobacco and alcohol consumption. These practices were emphasised as key components in reducing cancer risks, encouraging students to adopt healthier habits. A cancer awareness rally with placards, drawing attention to cancer screening, prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices, was organised at IB Circle (Aurad taluk), in collaboration with Orbit NGO, Humnabad. The Mobile Healthcare team highlighted the impact of lifestyles on various forms of cancer, such as reducing exposure to harmful chemicals, managing stress, and getting adequate sleep. The team also emphasised the importance of self-examination and being aware of warning signs such as unusual lumps, changes in skin appearance, or persistent coughs.
In Davanagere, interactive sessions in Chikkarakere village, allowed villagers to ask questions and express concerns about cancer. The team focused on making the villagers aware about good practices to prevention cancer.
In Kalaburagi, a cancer awareness rally was organised by the District Government Hospital Cancer Unit, Seva Sangama, and Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology. This rally, which started at the District Government Hospital and concluded at the Mini Vidhana Soudha, featured the Don Bosco Mobile Clinic team, which actively engaged the public on cancer prevention and awareness.
