Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the children of the AWAKE project of BREADS in MSK Nagar, organised a vibrant flashmob and awareness programme in their community on 22 June 2025. The AWAKE programme in partnership with Don Bosco Veedu, focuses on the empowerment of youth and women, through skill training and awareness in MSK Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram, a neighbourhood where the effects of substance abuse are often visible.
An energetic flashmob performance at Sahayamatha Church, Manacaud, delivered the powerful message, Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs, capturing the attention of the residents. This was followed by a thought-provoking mime that highlighted the value of healthy living, and the impact of drug use on individuals, families, and communities. The community responded positively, with children, youth, and women actively engaging in the event. Local residents shared their concerns and experiences, and the play helped initiate open conversations around the issue, while highlighting the role of children in spreading awareness and promoting positive behaviour.
Fr. Jiji Kalavanal, Rector of Don Bosco Trivandrum, led a community pledge, in which children, youth, and adults committed themselves to a drug-free life. The programme concluded with a handprint mural activity, symbolising MSK Nagar’s united stand against substance abuse and its hope for a healthier future.
