BREADS has launched a new project, Adult Literacy Program through BoscoNet and supported by TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) in seven districts of Karnataka state. The Adult Literacy Program intends to impart computer based literacy classes to the illiterates in the rural villages between the age group of 15 – 45 years including male and female. As the start up of the project, one day Facilitators training was organized by TCS at Chithra Don Bosco, Chitradurga on 6tth June 2018. There were 27 facilitators (20 from BREADS and 7 from Panaji Province) who participated in the training.
The project will be implemented in seven districts of Karnataka state which includes Bidar, Bellary, Chitradurga, Davangere, Gulbarga, Ramnagara and Yadgir. The project has appointed three facilitators each at 6 districts and 2 in Ramnagara district. Two supervisors were also appointed under the project. Each facilitator is provided with a laptop which is installed a software developed by TCS and an audio speaker. The purpose of the training was to train the facilitators on how to impart the literacy classes to the village people with the support of the Computer Based Functional Literacy (CBFL). The training was conducted by Mr. Kishore from TCS who introduced about TCS and further explained the objectives of the project. He trained the participants on the software, the application of the software, how to teach the beneficiaries in their respective language (kannada). The expected result of the project is that the learners should be able to read and write after the three months course. This will be assessed through periodical tests and a final evaluation test. The project further adds on to those who wish to continue their studies or wish to pass the class X exam will be facilitated to join the NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) which is also part of the project.
In the final session of the training, the trainer explained the reporting formats, the project activities and the duration of the literacy course to the facilitators. The training has imparted knowledge and skills required to implement the project effectively and efficiently in these seven districts of Karnataka state which is expected to increase the literacy rate of people in the state in the coming years.
