Crossing Hurdles – A Call for Action on World AIDS Day 2024

Every year, World AIDS Day serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing global effort to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The theme for World AIDS Day 2024, ‘Take the Rights Path,’ -highlights the critical role of human rights in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It calls for the removal of social and legal barriers that prevent people living with HIV from accessing healthcare, support, and treatment.

As per World Health Organisation (WHO) data in 2023, approximately 39.9 million people worldwide were living with HIV, and 630,000 individuals lost their lives to HIV-related causes. Meanwhile, 1.3 million new infections were recorded. These figures highlights the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses both the medical and social challenges that fuel the epidemic, particularly stigma, discrimination, and unequal access to healthcare.

In Karnataka, these global efforts are being mirrored by impactful local initiatives led by BREADS- partnered local Don Bosco organiszations. In Chitradurga, a rally was organiszed to raise awareness about HIV prevention and care. The event not only drew hundreds of community members but also sought to break down stigma and encourage people to seek knowledge and support. By fostering a sense of solidarity, the rally worked to create a more inclusive and informed community.

BREADS- supported mobile clinics in Bidar, Davanagere, and Kalaburagi, conducted awareness sessions in villages where access to HIV-related information is limited. These sessions aimed to educate communities about HIV transmission, prevention, and treatment options. By dispelling misinformation and tackling the stigma surrounding HIV, the session empowered people to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health. In Kalaburagi, the team collaborated with the Health department by displaying informative posters in public space.

This initiative is an essential part of making healthcare accessible to everyone, especially those in underserved areas who may otherwise not have access to vital services.
