Trivandrum, August 14, 2025 – Don Bosco Veedu commemorated the 79th anniversary of India’s Independence with a cultural evening, AarkkumPaadam (“Anyone Can Sing”). The programme brought together women, youth and families from the BREADS- supported Applied Women Advancement & Knowledge Enhancement (AWAKE) project, communities to experience a shared celebration of freedom through culture, creativity and empowerment.
The event was inaugurated by Mr. Antony Raju, MLA Trivandrum, who commended Don Bosco Veedu for its socially relevant initiatives that uplift marginalised communities. He remarked that “this is a new freedom, where anyone can sing their dreams out loud, no longer buried in silence.”
Fr. Thomas Mekkaden, Director of Don Bosco Nivas, highlighted Don Bosco Veedu’s ongoing development initiatives, such as AWAKE, which in partnership with BREADS, supports the community through supplementary education for children and skilling for the youth and women. Fr. Jiji, Rector of Don Bosco Veedu, reminded everyone that India’s freedom fighters “did not struggle so we could live divided by petty differences, but so that we might live united, with dignity and hope.”
Anchored by Jeena, a vibrant youth leader, the event was filled with energy through quiz competitions, interactive games and performances. Registered women participants also received prizes through a lucky draw, adding to the celebratory spirit. Nearly 20 karaoke performances were woven together with short reflections on the meaning of freedom. Police officers from the Fort Station, led by their Circle Inspector, joined the participants in singing, underscoring how cultural gatherings can strengthen community bonds. The voices of participants added personal depth to the evening. Abel, a student, shared: “Freedom means I can go to school, open my books and dream about my future.” Pranav, a youth, reflected: “Freedom is choosing my path and speaking without fear.” A women’s representative from the SHEROES collective added: “Freedom lets me speak proudly and chase my dreams without discrimination.” Through this celebration, Don Bosco Veedu and BREADS reaffirmed their commitment to empowering women, youth and families by creating platforms for expression, unity and social transformation under the AWAKE project.
