Don Bosco Hospet organized capacity building on gender equality for the women leaders of various self-help groups in Hospet, Ballari district of Karnataka. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Suresh- District Coordinator, Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT), Ballari. Ms. Savithri- Project Coordinator, Women Empowerment Programme (WEP) and Ms. Hanumanthamma- Coordinator, TARUNI (SHG Federation) were also present.
Fr. Siju – Director- DB Hospet, in his inaugural address endorsed the impact of the past trainings on gender equality. He said the trainings have helped the students, women and children to understand the importance of practicing gender equality and the meaning of the concept in real life.
Mr. Suresh was the resource person for the two-day training for 40 women participants. The training stressed the importance of gender equality, women’s rights and the government schemes available for the protection of women from violence and exploitation. The women were encouraged to begin practicing gender quality within their families. The resource person brought to their notice, various circumstances where the women themselves discriminate between male and female children in their families. He pointed out that mothers have great influence over the men and boys in moulding their attitude and manners towards female members in the family and outside, with respect to gender equality. The activity-oriented training held the active attention of the participants throughout the training and they were enthused to learn more about the concepts and issues related to the rights of women, and the available schemes under the government and the means of accessing those provisions. The participants gave their feedback on the final day. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Hampamma- SHG leader.
