On July 12th and 13th, 2024, the second batch of the Human Rights Training brought together 40 social workers and community organisers. The Workshop aimed to deepen the understanding of human rights and their role as defenders of human rights.
The first day commenced with the inaugural address by Fr. Jose Koyickal, SDB, Provincial of Bangalore Province. Fr. Jose emphasized the crucial role of social workers in advocating for justice and protecting vulnerable communities. This was followed by a session led by Fr. George PS, Executive Director of BREADS. Drawing insights from 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and Who Will Cry When You Die, Fr. George highlighted the importance of proactive behaviour, teamwork, and service mentality in human rights advocacy.
Mr. Sonikutty George, a Child Protection Specialist with UNICEF, then explored the fundamental right to live with dignity, referring to the UN Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Following this session, participants visited Bosco Vatsalya Bhavan, Bosco Mane, and Bosco Vikas. These visits provided firsthand exposure to BOSCO’s efforts in rescuing and rehabilitating vulnerable children.
The second-day sessions were led by members of the Mitra Foundation. In the first session, Ms. Bella Rosario began by discussing the role of human rights advocacy for marginalized communities. Then the second session was led by Fr. Cyril, focusing on the fundamental principles of Human rights and the importance of advocacy. The third session was led by Ms. Rajalakshmi Michael Samy and addressed the structural inequalities exist in globalization, casteism, and patriarchy. She highlighted the importance of social transformation through education and advocacy to promote equity and justice.
The training program has helped the participants gain a deeper understanding of human rights principles, enhance their advocacy skills, and strengthen their commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of vulnerable communities.
