Don Bosco Centre for Social Action organized two days training on human rights education and child rights education for the government school teachers on 11th and 12th of September 2018. There were 28 teachers participated from Yadgiri and shahapur taluks with 15 male and 13 female participants.
The training began with the traditional lighting of the lamp and the occasion was delighted by the presence of dignitaries including Mr. Chandrashekar Alipur, state child rights commission member, Dr. Hanamanthray Karaddi, district child welfare committee president, Fr. K C Mathew, Rector Don Bosco Yadgiri, Fr. George Kollashany, Director Don Bosco Centre for Social Action, Fr. Joshy Puttur, Principal Don Bosco B.ed College Yadgiri and CREAM staff.
The resource person for the training, Fr. Anil, Director, Don Bosco Youth Service Karnataka had an interactive session with the staff on human rights. He insisted on the need to give children a chance for participation and humanity should be developed from classrooms. He suggested the teachers to become the model of all good gestures for children to follow. The messages were conveyed through interactions, games and video presentations. The following session was taken by Mr. Sharabayya who trained on child rights. The implications of the rights in classrooms especially the right to participation was insisted more convincingly.
On the second day, the teachers participated with anticipation and the session was taken over by Mr. Siddalingappa, CREAM Coordinator, Deodurga. He shared about the existing child protection mechanisms in the district and narrated briefly the experience of working for child rights protection in Deodurga district through CREAM project interventions. Especially the advocacy actions taken towards prevention of child labour, child marriage, child trafficking and child abuse were appreciated and the teachers approved their support to promote child rights. Mr. Raghuveer Singh Takur, district child labour officer also briefed to the teachers on government schemes for children, scholarship for education and scholarship for children of building contract workers available. The teachers are the best source of firsthand information related to school dropouts and hence they can facilitate these schemes to the deserving children identified.
At the completion of the training, the teachers were distributed the human rights CREAM handbook. They were motivated to spread the knowledge on child rights to parents from the community as to promote child rights and education.
