Mysuru in Karnataka is a popular tourist destination, offering many options for sightseeing. Unfortunately, one of those sights is also that of numerous children and adults begging. This phenomenon is disturbing on many levels, especially when the children and infants are involved.
Supported by BREADS, Don Bosco Makkalalaya, through its street presence, reaches out to many such children, offering them options for rehabilitation. To draw public attention to the plight of children entrapped in begging and other forms of child labour, DB Makkalalaya teamed up with the local Women & Child, and Labour departments to observe World Day Against Child Labour. In two separate events, DB Makkalalaya coordinated various rallies and street plays with 260 Sociology and Social Work students of six different city colleges to spread public awareness in various parts of Mysuru city. Even the rain did not deter the students from enthusiastically creating awareness through their performances, and their active participation in the rallies and distribution of pamphlets.
